Post 14 - Location research

This is a photograph of the the woods, this would be a good place for us to do our filming in as this is a place where not a lot of people usually are, also it is abandoned which implies there is no help around.

This is also in the woods but this is the bridge over the pond. This part especially is very good for a horror and pond could imply danger, the girl that gets killed could be hidden in the water.

This is the path going into the woods, this area would be good for the very beginning as it is very spacious for titles, furthermore it is as if the girls in the film would be walking into the unknown they cannot see beyond the trees.

Post 1 - Brief

The task me and my group (Charlie and Megan) have been set is to create a titile sequence for a film, we are able to choose the genre. Me and my grouo decided on Horror as we feel we have the knowledge about this film in terms of Mise en sceen cinematography editing and sound/music. We will be working together to carry out lots of research which includes audience research to help us know what the audience want to see. We have looked alot at titles so we know about them and how to relate them to our film. Brief by DemDolphin on GoAnimate

Planning 1 - Initial Ideas

Me Megan and Charlie all worked together to plan our initial ideas through discussing and bullet pointing what we need for our title sequence. We always have lots of ideas and before this spider diagram we had another one. However there was too much so we simplified it. We have all agreed on our chosen location, which is in a forest, we decided this in the begining as we felt this is a place where a horrible even would take place. Also a good prop we thought we could use is a phone to show the inboxes from the boy they two girls are going to meet. Our genre is 'Horror' as this is the genre we had the most ideas for based on 'Mise en scene' 'Editing' 'Cinematography' 'etc.

Post 16 - Audience Analysis through Pie Charts

Results from questionnaire.

From looking at our data I make some major decisions about our title sequence. The 1st pie chart shows us that people we gave the questionaires to prefer text to have an 'Bloody effect' or 'Scratched. Only a small minorty ticked for 'plain text' so I think its important that we involve some sort of scary effect to the titles to show the films is a horror and to also suite the audiences perfered choice.

The 2nd pie chart 'Does our audience like horror films' give us confidence as we know that the majority of people to like horror films, so we made the correct choice.

The results from the 3rd pir chart is easy to notice that people prefere it to start off

Post 15 - Vox Pops

These are our vox pops. These are used as audience research to see what people prefere. These are a great way to see what people prefer or like and why. On this video we can see some people dont like horror films and some people do and they all give their reasons why. From this we are able to decide wether we are going to go againts the research and do something different or play it safe and use the things people like to see.

Post 11 - The Strangers

The editing here is slow paced, the shots also fade. This type of editing really pulls in the audiences focus as when it fades they have time to think ‘whats next?’ also the slow editing like ‘The exorcism of Emily Rose’ creates the calm and mysterious mood. The editing is used to transfer one shot to the next which in this case is just of houses in America.

The titles in this film ‘The strangers’ instantly tells us its going to be horror. The fact the coulor of the backfround is black indicates death, also the orange text reminds us of Halloween as black and orange are associated with the scary season. The titles says ‘what you are about to see is inspired by true events’ This causes a tense atmosphere for the audience as the they are worried about what they are going to see as it has been inspired by something which actually happened.

The non diegetic sound at this point of the title sequence is of a 911 call. The call seems very realistic which relates to the titles where it says its been inspired by true events as this call could be the real one. The audience would question whether it is real or not. The caller seems to not be speaker and just heavy breathing.
The cinematography here is very clever, the extreme long shot is shot through a smashed car window. The shot allows us to see the boys but also the car that looks old and now ruined. The way the window has been smashed make the audience question how did it get is heart shape? did whoever done it plan to have it shaped like that? why?

The mise en scene in this shot tells us a lot about the film. Straight away we have strong idea that it is a horror. The knife is a weapon which is usually used in horror films so from our past experiences we guess that this is the genre. The thick blood on the knife implies that this weapon wasn't used that long ago. This makes the audience question who use the knife? why? who has it injured or killed? Furthermore there is a red rose petal beside the knife which is a very strong contrast to confuse the audience. The rose petal could tell us that there was a romance but between who? This is a very good shot for the audience to be thinking about.

Post 12 - the exorcism of emily rose

Post 8 - Spiderwick chronicles

The title in this film is gold this indicates adventure as gold is associated with treasure which is what you look for when on an adventure. The font of the titles is used to create the theme of magic which is the theme of the film. This shows the type of audience this filmed towards which is the younger generation. The title appears through the branches and is relevant as the letters have a tree branch look about them; also the end of the ‘R’ has small branches grown from it, which relates to the trees that surround the house. The trees are also an indicator the film has something to do with nature, and the title ‘Spiderwick’ foreshadows the film will have some kind of involvement with a spider and insects.

The cinematography creates the meaning of discovery in this shot the camera is places behind a magnify glass. The shot allows us to see the top half of the fairy, and is in focus just on the fairy. The audiences response to this shot would be shock, these reason for this is because we get to see something extraordinary because of this medium close up. The shot highlight the main attribute in this shot, which is the fairy, this link to mise en scene as the shot makes us look at the fairy.

The mise en scene in this shot reveals a lot about the character and the film. The cluttered room creates the feeling the man in this shot could be a hoarder, not wanting to let any of his exploration equipment go. Also we gather the man has something to do with making discoveries because of the pictures around the room, the working desk etc. The costume implies that this film was set in the early 20th century, which would answer any questions as to why his equipment is old.

This is the very first shot of the film and already the music is playing, at this point we hear low strings being played then a harp being played, this indicates the sense of discovery as it changes for low sounds to high. Harps are usually associated with magic and fairy tale films. This would make the audience wonder whether this film is going to have a happy ending like the traditional fairy tale films.

The editing in the opening sequence at this point is very fast paced. This creates the idea the man we have seen is working fast trying to work out what it is he’s just saw (the fairy). Also the fast paced editing doesn’t allow the audience to understand the information which is being put across. This would make the audience slightly confused and question ‘what is he doing?’ ‘what does that mean?’ This makes the audience think ahead as to what he is doing.

Post 9 - convntions of a title sequence

The conventions of a title sequence is that they all have a distributor. Depending on the type of film the distributor will differ. From watching films in the past I realised that many films which is mainly targeted towards older children use the distribute ‘paramount’ this is a very well known distributor who take many films under there name and advertise them. Many films I have watched which have the distributor ‘paramount’ are usually in my opinion good so I can pre -judge by the distributor whether its going to be a good quality film or not. The films ‘Spiderwick Chronicles’ and ‘Bridget Jone’s diary’ both have the distributor ‘Paramount’ ‘Fun Size’ and ‘Flight’ also use the distributor  ‘Paramount’ The films are all aimed for any one above the age of 10 as younger kids may not understand.

In scary films it is conventional for the production/film to come first for example in the films ‘The exorcist’ ‘The sixth sense’ and ‘A nightmare on Elm street’ This happens. This could show that this is the most important part as they are the makers of the film and more involved in the making of it. Also the order the actors come up on the screen imply that these particular names will play the main characters. In all three cases of the horror films this is correct. They all have this which could also show they are big film stars and usually if there name is on its own is like that so the audience can notice the big movie stars that are in the film.

The titles creativity is conventional in the three horror/thriller films I have looked at. The three films I have looked at are ‘Dreamcatcher’ ‘Se7en’ and ‘Silent hill’ they show there creativity through the shots and editing used. In ‘Dreamcatcher’ and ‘Silent Hill’ there is clear computerised work which the tiles are shown over. The use of this shows the creativity as they are using all the possible aspects they can. The film ‘Se7en’ uses many extreme close ups and close up in the title sequence. This shows the creativity as they are deliberately using them shots to hide certain things from the audience. The shots that are used in ‘Se7en’ are also very creative in themselves, as the objects used are different and relate to the film which makes the audience think that the film is going to be very different

Post 6 - wallander

This shot is of the two young girls quickly  walking. The shot is a medium dolly from behind as if someone or somthing like their guilty conscience is following them. This type of shot creates the idea of 'why are their faces being covered ?' It makes the audience aslo question 'what are they walking from, or to?' The fact the shot has both the girls in it shows the auidience they have a close relationship as they're close to eachother.

In this shot we can hear the two girls heavy breathing which suggests they have been involved in some physical situation. The questions this brings to the audiences attention is 'could they have been the ones to attack the taxi man? as if they are heavy breathing they have obviously been doing something physically demanding.

The mise en scene in this shot creates the meaning that the girls on the left is in more important than the girls on the right as she is out of focous and her coustume doesnt seem to be as outragous as the girl on the left. The girl on the left is wearing a leather jacket and has red in hair which shows she takes pride in what she looks like, also this could also show danger as leather jackets are typically worn by 'bikers' and the red coulor in her hair could forshadow the blood on her face from the man in taxi. The blood tells the audience straight away it was them who harmed this man, however it would leave them questioning 'how?'

The editing involving this shot is very quick here as it shows clue about the victim. We get to see theres a tracker in his car with blood on it which implies that there could be a chance hes going to be found. Also the fast editing creates the realtionship the two girls have with the victim which is that they're in control as they have seriously hurt him.

Post 5 - Brick

This shot is a medium close up of some shoes. By the looks of things these shoes belong to a boy. They are not trainers or boots so we sterotypically think hes been to work or school as these brown shows are smart. However the shot only focuses on the shoes which implies that his face is trying to be hidden or the directer doesnt want us to know what he looks like just yet.

The editing in this part of the clip shows the girl on the floor then the boys face, each time get closer to his face. The shots are of the girls shoes, hair, then her hand. The shot of the girls hand in the water implies her life is slipping away like the water is throught her lifeless fingers. The  editing then quickly changes to the same girls hand putting a note into someones locker at school. We can tell the hand belongs to the girl as the braclets are exactly the same. This tells the audience that this shot is in the past when she was alive. Also it makes the audience question who the note is for, 'isit the boys locker whos with her?'

The music in the titles is of cowbells which makes the auidience think of a western country. Also there is a faint sound of running water, which later relates to where the girl is. The cowbells confuse the audience when the film begins as it isnt set in a western country.

Within the mise en scene in this shot we can see the boy looking at the girl 'emily' who appears to be dead on the floor. We can see a tunnel where either sewage or water runs through. The way she is laying make the audience question whether she jumped off or was pushed.

Post 4 - The sixth sense

This is the opening sequence of ‘The sixth sense’ The titles are accompanied by a string group which causes the audiences to be scared as this type of music is typically used in horror films. The audience would be questioning whether the film is going to be scary. The font type used is very serious and is in a light wash of blue on a black background. The black background could imply the idea of the unknown as black shows darkness and death.

This close up of an ancient light bulb is using the rule of thirds here as there is space on the right and a little space on the left. The light bulb has been turned on in a old and not normally used room. The reason we know this is because the mise en scene has just a light bulb within it, the directer has done this on purpose to have the audiences focus on this one object. The collection of dust and dirt tells the audience it is old and hasn’t been cleaned for a while. Also the light bulb is used for a reason, which is to light a dark room. The darkness of the room before the light bulb is turned on relates to the titles where the black background is used which cause the audience to think of the unknown in the dark. This has a connection with the title of the film ‘The sixth sense’ which could be thought of as being able to see things other people may not, or the idea of the unknown which may be ghosts and spirits.

The cinematography in this clip conveys the meaning that the woman is being watched and she has realized or sensed that. The close up gives us a more personal insight to her character. We can see she is wearing makeup and jewellery which implies that she is celebrating or having a special occasion, hence going down into the basement to get some wine. The camera has been placed behind the wine cabinet which conveys the idea that someone or something watching her is trying to hide. There is no sound in this particular shot as the director wants to draw the audience with the silence and pay attention to what her facial expression is showing.

The fact we can hear the litghtbulb slowly turning on creates the feeling of emptyness as the room is so quiet and empty we can herar the quietest of sounds. As the light bulb is the first thing we see it is alos good its the first thing we hear too as it links. The sound is very quiet and almost sounds like a train from far far away. The fact we can hear it allows the audience to feel close to the lightbulb, relating to the fact it is a close up.

Post 3 - Memento

Momento (Nolan, 2000, U.S) The first thing in the opening sequences of 'Momento' is the droning sound whilst the titles are appearing, this kid of sound make the audience think the film is going to be serious. The font used for the titles is a royal blue colour on a black background, the colour is very strong a stands out.

The first image we see is a hand holding onto a photo of dead person. The photo shows the blood on a wall of the person who lies dead. Within the mise en scene we are unable to see who is holding the photo, this makes the audience think whether the hand looks manly or feminine, it also makes them question why the person holding the picture is being hidden. The camera angle of this shot is high and is as if we are the person holding it looking at it. It is also an extreme close up which is done deliberately to make the audience focus on what is in the picture and the hand which get the audience thinking

The hand begins to shake, this would make the audience wonder the person holding the photo must be crying or be old to shake. The non-digetic sound which has turned more into a musical piece involving violins is playing. The person holding the photo shakes it vigorously trying the make the picture clear, only every time he does it the picture fades. The hidden person holding the photo shakes it 4 times as if they are trying to make the image clearer, but because the photo is fading this confuses the audience and makes them question whether this is done to dis guard the photo or whether the shot is being played backwards. The music is still being played as it creates the intensity of the scene.

This extreme close of the man who took the photo is used to show his expression on his face, which is serious and relaxed, he doesn't seem across worried. However we can see sweat on his face which implies he is anxious or has maybe been involved in something physical. There is also two verticle cuts on his face about 3 cm apart. This would create the effect that the man holding the photo was involved. The audience may begin to question 'are those cut from the victim' 'is he the killer'.

This high angle medium shot is used to show the image in the picture but on camera, to look as if we are that man who took the photo. Also within the mise en scene we are able to see the dead mans glasses and blood splattered on them and around his head, implying he has been shot.

This shot is later on after we have discovered the blonde man shot the man with brown hair, shows the man with brown hair is trying the help the man with blonde hair who has a memory problem. They go to get into the man with brown hairs car however the other man says "my car". This shows the blonde man has power over the man who seems to be some sort of work colleague or helper.
